On 8 September 2019, Point of View (Organisation based in Mumbai) and Olakh jointly organised a movie screening of the Australian film “The Baulkham Hills African Ladies Troupe”. The hour-long film is a celebration of the remarkable spirits of four African women survivors of sexual abuse, and the triumph of their improbable theatre troupe. On 23rd March 2019 the SAMABHAV Film Festival on Masculinities took place at the Parul Institute of Arts. We were watching several Movies about sexual and gender based discrimination, consent and rejection, homosexuality or masculinities how to handle it. Interaction Session on ”Safe and Fear Free Access to Public Spaces”

Sunday follow-up discussion began as usual with each participant’s concerns being shared. We dived into a discussion about the role of each person in making the public spaces the way they are. How should we react when we witness harassment/sexual assault? What actions would be effective in reclaiming public spaces for all and making it safe? Participants shared their experience of being afraid/ being fear free outside their home. Metoo movement was also discussed.

The 18th edition of Samvad on Saturday 24th November began with a music performance of some songs on the MeToo movement and women empowerment. We talked about safety and our experience in the public space with a presentation on various methods of reclaiming public space. Do we really think whether they are safe and inclusive for all? Can we access our public spaces without any fear at any time? We did an exercise – writing down what we think when we hear the word public space. Learning about our notions and perceptions about it. Interaction Session on ”Gender, Sexuality and the Internet”

The follow up session began with each participants question/comments. A common concern was pornography and how it has affected people’s lives. Can there be safe pornography? Underage exposure to such content was discussed. Many personal stories were shared related to the topic providing a rich discussion. Cyber security was discussed and gender priviledge/disadvantage/experience was discussed. Many people shared they could find open space on the digital platforms to express their sexuality.
