The 14th edition of Samvad on Saturday 28th July 2018 began with a realization. That “We love to demand laws. But we don’t use these laws.” We discussed our fears and hesitation on the subject of sexual violence while learning statistical evidence and discussing a deep-set culture of this violence. And even though 93% of rapes were done by persons known by the victim, we don’t want to complain against these people. The social rules are clear and yet subconscious. The highlights of the session were: severity of punishment is not a deterrent of crime. Surety of consequences deters crime. Consent is key, asking for it as well as giving it. We need to have this conversations regularly in our daily life. And lastly what we can do for others is “Support, Support, Support”.
