Uniform Civil Code & Muslim Women Rights with Noorjahan Safia Niaz.

Our 4th SAMWAD, took place with the speaker Noorjahan Safia Niaz, co-founder of Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA). Spoked about the traditional muslim clergy in the country and has been demanding Muslim personal law should be codified so that its provision were clear to everyone.

However, the conservative clergy has claimed that the codification and banning of practices such as ‘oral talaq’ are the same as tampering with the Shariat and the Islamic way of life.

The BMMA had recently published a report of a survey in which it had found that 92.1 % of the surveyed Muslim women wanted a ban on oral and unilateral Talaq, while 91.2 % did not want their husbands to have a second wife. UCC and triple talaq are two very different issues. “The principles of Muslim Personal Law do not injure anybody else. They need not take any offense if a Muslim wants to continue with his adherence with the Shariat; the Shariat is immutable, as I said, and fundamental principles of Shariat are not open for reconsideration,” she said.
